Danish prosecutors refuse to ban Islamic movement Thursday, 19 June 2008 AP COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark's top prosecutor says the Danish branch of a small radical Islamic movement cannot be banned. Last week, the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem released video clips showing masked Jewish settlers ganging up on and severely beating elderly Palestinian peasants near the town of Yatta, southwest of Hebron. At least three Palestinians were wounded in the unprovoked assault, including a man and his wife, both in their early sixties.The latest act of settler terror was not an isolated incident, as official Israeli spokespersons would often claim. It represents a disturbing and persistent phenomenon as young and usually heavily armed settlers continue to attack Palestinian farmers, peasants and shepherds and vandalize their property in an effort to drive them away from their lands and villages.We who live in the West Bank know too well what it means to live next to a Jewish settlement. It means constant harassment, unending vandalism and perpetual terrorism, both psychological and physical.What is even more disturbing is the often brazen collusion between the army and the settlers. Ask any conscientious Israeli or Palestinian and he or she will tell you that the settlers couldn’t do what they are doing without at least a "yellow light" from the government and army.Israel claims to be a state where the rule of law prevails. However, it is abundantly clear that when it comes to settler savagery in particular, and Israel’s overall violations of Palestinian rights in general, the rule of law is suspended.For example, when a Palestinian files a complaint against settlers, he or she is asked to produce nearly impossible evidence, like the names of the perpetrators, their identity card numbers and their places of residence. Eventually, the complaint is registered against "anonymous" and consigned to oblivion. Such was the fate of thousands of complaints filed by desperate Palestinians seeking redress in Israeli courts.And whenever serious physical damage to Palestinian property occurs, as happens often, the Israeli police challenge the Palestinian victims to prove beyond doubt that the damage was done by Jews and not self-inflicted. In other words, Jews can do no harm and settlers are innocent even if proven guilty.The routine and nearly daily attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinians and their property throughout the West Bank are not merely mundane acts of vandalism by rogue elements within the settler population. On the contrary, they are part of a larger and well-devised plan aimed at driving Palestinians away from their villages and hamlets and lands in order to make more room for Jewish settlement expansion. It is part and parcel of Israel’s ethnic cleansing schemes against non-Jews in Palestine.Besides, it is well known that whenever a terrorist settler is detained, and this happens rarely, dozens of politicians, Knesset members, retired army commanders and of course, rabbis, are mobilized to free "an innocent Jew whose only guilt is defending Jewish rights and showing loyalty to the Land of Israel."This proves, if any proof were needed, that the entire Israeli Jewish society is accomplice and guilty in this shame, not only by keeping silent but also by always covering up for settler crimes.To be sure, there are some Israeli Jewish and international groups, such as B’Tselem, the Christian Peace-making Teams (CPT) and the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) that monitor settler crimes against Palestinians. On this occasion and on behalf of the Palestinian people, I would like to salute these conscientious people and thank them for their dedication and laborious efforts on behalf of humanity and justice.Nonetheless, settler crimes in the West Bank are so rampant and pervasive that greater efforts are required to monitor and expose them, especially in light of the obvious collusion between the occupation army and the settlers.Hence, young men and women from around the world including Jews, Christians and Muslims and others, are encouraged to come to the West Bank to be a voice for the voiceless and lend a helping hand to those helpless Palestinians for whom daily life has become a formidable challenge due to settler harassment, vandalism and terrorism.In addition to physical assaults on Palestinian villagers, settler terrorists routinely burn down fields, orchards and olive groves, often in full view of Israeli soldiers who look on nonchalantly, if not satisfactorily. Moreover, the settlers close Palestinian roads, even roads to one’s home, break water pipes, power and telephone cables. They also often throw poisonous or contaminated substances in Palestinian water wells.Again, when Palestinians complain to the police, they are made to feel as if they were talking to a wall.The criminal behavior of the settlers reflects a virulent ideological indoctrination whereby non-Jews in general and Palestinians in particular are viewed as "not fully human."For example, Rabbi Abraham Kook, the spiritual Godfather of religious Zionism, e.g. the settler movement, claimed that "the difference between a Jewish soul and souls of non-Jews is greater and deeper than the difference between a human soul and the souls of cattle."I know that some religious-Zionist pundits would indulge in all sorts of metaphorical interpretations to make Kook’s Jewish supremacy doctrine look innocuous.However, the behavior of his followers in the West Bank should leave no doubt as to the virulent nature of his teachings.Today, the vast majority of settlers in the West Bank believe that non-Jews living in Israel-Palestine ought to be either exterminated, enslaved or expelled. To enforce their racist ideas, prominent rabbis often cite the most extremist biblical and Talmudic passages pertaining to treatment of non-Jews living among Jews.A few months ago, a settler leader in the Hebron region told me, "you have to choose between death, enslavement and expulsion from the Land of Israel."Obviously, with such a mindset, there can be no peace and coexistence between Jews, Muslims and Christians in the Holy Land.Indeed, how can you coexist, let alone coexist amicably, with someone who believes that you are not equal to him and that God created you to be enslaved by him as a wood-hewer or water-carrier?Finally, a few words to the Israeli government. During the Nazi era, the German authorities gave Nazi vigilantes, such as the Hitler Youth organization, free rein to attack Jews and their property. Now, you are effectively doing the same by giving these settler hoodlums a free rein to terrorize and assault innocent Palestinians. So, take note of what you are doing.

Strange Creature Immune to Pain [LiveScience 2008-01-28]
As vulnerable as naked mole rats seem, researchers now find the hairless, bucktoothed rodents are invulnerable to the pain of acid and the sting of chili peppers. A better understanding of pain resistance in these sausage-like creatures could lead to new drugs for people with chronic pain, scientists added. Naked mole rats live in cramped, oxygen-starved burrows some six feet underground in central East Africa. Unusually, they are cold-blooded ??? which, as far as anyone knows, is unique among mammals. "They're the nicest, sweetest animals I've ever worked with ??? they look frightening, but they're very gentle," said neurobiologist Thomas Park at the University of Illinois at Chicago Scientists knew the mole rats were quite sensitive to touch ??? perhaps to help replace their almost useless eyes. After probing their skin, Park and his colleagues unexpectedly discovered the rodents lacked the chemical Substance P, which causes the feeling of burning pain in mammals. Acid test The researchers discovered that when unconscious mole rats had their paws injected with a slight dose of acid, "about what you'd experience with lemon juice," Park said, as well as some capsaicin ??? the active ingredient of chili peppers ??? the rodents showed no pain. "Their insensitivity to acid was very surprising," Park told LiveScience. "Every animal tested ??? from fish, frogs, reptiles, birds and all other mammals ??? every animal is sensitive to acid." To explore their pain resistance further, the researchers used a modified cold sore virus to carry genes for Substance P to just one rear foot of each tested rodent. Park and his colleagues found the DNA restored the naked mole rats' ability to feel the burning sensation other mammals experience from capsaicin. "They'd pull their foot back and lick it," Park said. Other feet remained impervious to the sting of capsaicin. "Capsaicin is very specific for exciting the fibers that normally have Substance P," Park added. "They're not the fibers that respond to a pinprick or pinch, but the ones that respond after an injury or burn and produce longer-lasting pain." Curiously, the researchers found that mole rats remained completely insensitive to acids, even with the Substance P genes. This suggests there is a fundamental difference in how their nerves respond to such pain. "Acid acts on the capsaicin receptor and on another family of receptors called acid-sensitive ion channels," Park said. "Acid is not as specific as capsaicin. The mole rat is the only animal that shows completely no response to acid." Why so insensitive? Scientists theorize naked mole rats evolved this insensitivity to acid due to underground living. The rodents exhale high levels of carbon dioxide, and in such tight, poorly ventilated spaces it builds up in tissues, making them more acidic. In response, the mole rats became desensitized to acid. "To give you an idea of what they experience, we normally all breathe in carbon dioxide levels of less than 0.1 percent. If people are exposed to an air mixture with as low as 5 percent carbon dioxide, we'll feel a sharp, burning, stinging sensation in our eyes and nose," Park said. "We hypothesize that naked mole rats live in up to 10 percent carbon dioxide." Researcher Gary Lewin, a neuroscientist at the Max Delbr??ck Institute for Molecular Medicine in Germany, noted, "People may say, 'So what ??? it's weird, but what has it to do with human pain?' I think that is wrong, unimaginative and short sighted." Lewin noted that all vertebrate pain-receptor systems "are built in a highly similar way, so the mole rat may tell us how you can unbuild the system." Help for people Specifically, Park noted this research adds to existing knowledge about Substance P. "This is important specifically to the long-term, secondary-order inflammatory pain. It's the pain that can last for hours or days when you pull a muscle or have a surgical procedure," he explained. As such, these findings might shed new light on chronic pain. Park said, "We're learning which nerve fibers are important for which kinds of pain, so we'll be able to develop new strategies and targets." Lewin added, "We really do not understand the molecular mechanism of acid sensing in humans, although it is thought to be pretty important in inflammatory pain. An animal that naturally lacks such a mechanism may help us identify what the mechanism actually is." Park next plans to study distantly related animals that dwell in similar circumstances, such as the Mexican free-tailed bat and the Alaskan marmot, which both spend large amounts of time in high carbon dioxide caves or burrows. "How are they surviving down there? It'd be interesting if we saw some parallels there with the naked mole rats," Park said. John McCain.But about a year ago, Gadsby convinced himself that the U.S. government, not terrorists, demolished the World Trade Center buildings in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. And that belief has turned him into a fasting activist."I've never been politically active until the 9/11 subject came up," he said, sitting on a fabric folding chair last week along 16th Street, outside the complex that houses McCain's Phoenix office.
Judging by repeated news headlines it appears that Britain is in the midst of a crime pandemic. While the language and tone of many of the reports in newspapers betrays political motivations behind the stories, a more serious appraisal, which is hard to deny, is that crime is now rampant across all cross sections of society and every aspect of societal life. Criminals are getting younger while the crimes are more heinous and deplorable. It is a sad reflection on society that young people, barely of school leaving age, ‘tool’ themselves up with knives and an increasing number with guns as a custom, prepared to take the life of another human being merely over a wanton stare. The prisons are full as new and bigger ones are planned. Convicted criminals are being reclassified as ‘petty offenders’ providing justification for early release from already overcrowded prisons to make way for what may be described as a ‘conveyer belt’ of newly convicted ‘more serious’ criminals. However, the crime statistics, if you believe them, could not be further from truth. The two so-called most authoritative measures of crime in England and Wales, the British Crime Survey (BCS) and crimes reported by the Police Service, publish vastly different totals for the number of crimes committed. In the 12 months ending March 2007, the BCS estimated 11.3 million crimes against adults in England and Wales compared to 5.4 million crimes reported by the police over the same period. The main reason for this apparent discrepancy is attributed to the fact that victims of crime felt it pointless to report the great majority - nearly 6 in 10 - crimes to the police, an indictment in itself. According to both measures around three in four crimes were against property while about 20% were violent crimes against the person such as Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH). Perhaps the most striking break from every day perceptions of crime was that over the last decade crime has reportedly fallen significantly according to the BCS: all vehicle theft down 61%; domestic burglary down 59%; domestic violence down 59%; all violent crime down 41%; and overall crime down by 42%.If what the BCS is claiming is true and crime has fallen so significantly, how is it that posters ‘adorn’ most hospitals and many train and tube stations warning the public that there is a zero tolerance policy when it comes to attacks or assaults on staff? Why is it that increasing numbers of teachers are on long term sickness leave or leaving the profession early due to assaults, threats or depression. What is making the police employ metal detectors at train and tube stations and outside some schools to screen for knives and other offensive weapons? Why do some schools feel the need to have a police officer permanently on their payroll and at the end of a school day request a van full of officers outside the schools gates? How is it that most town centres on the weekend are a bedlam of binge drinking, mass public disorder, blatant vandalism, common assault, acts of indecency etc?If crime has fallen so significantly, fighting crime should have become a loss making enterprise, increasing numbers of police officers should be seeking alternative employment, prisons would be closing down and the criminal justice system should be downsizing. In actual fact the exact opposite is true. Mopping up after crime has become so profitable, with guaranteed future returns on investments, that the Government has sold off to the private sector both the management and maintenance of prisons and more such initiatives are already in the pipeline. Far from being a dying profession, an army of new Community Support Officers, have joined the ranks of the police fighting crime around the country. Prisons are not closing down for a lack of inmates but new and bigger ones are being expedited while a disused prison ship has been rapidly renovated as a stopgap measure. The criminal justice system is not running short of work but has a huge backlog of outstanding cases to process -resulting in detainees serving a term in jail before even being convicted.The staggering 11.3 million crimes in the year to March 2007, as recorded in the BCS, is clearly an underestimate. Firstly, it only records adult crimes – this means that child victims, where there appears to be the greatest increase most recently and who are amongst the most vulnerable, are literally ignored. Secondly, notwithstanding changes in counting methods, there appears to be a huge number of crimes, particularly in workplaces like hospitals, transport systems and schools which appear to be significantly underrepresented in the overall published totals. These crimes are amongst the most serious as they tend to be repeated violent crimes against an individual. Finally, overlooking many crimes due to their prevalence in society and a lack of resources to cope has become an increasingly common excuse, irrespective of whether it is related to mass public disorder offences, binge drinking weekends or the ‘legalising’ of cannabis through reclassification.Measuring the true level crime is one area of public life, amongst an increasing many, where people do not trust published statistics. When politicians insist on advocating that crime has fallen, in contrast to peoples everyday experiences, this only increases alienation and mistrust of politicians. Furthermore, whether it is crime statistics or the justification for detention without trial, the politicisation of policing has significantly undermined public trust and confidence in the police force itself. This in turn can only make fighting crime more difficult in the long run.
Fear of the isms: communism, socialism etc. has led to the perception that the capitalist way is the only way to be without slipping into some sort of preconceived abyss of eternal sociological damnation. This has led to complacency and a general acceptance of the status quo: the norm as it is presented to us. There are no questions asked; there are no protests: there are no thinkers that can see beyond, to a place and time where things may even work for all of humanity. We are told that greed is human nature, given examples of a few people or groups in history that have exemplified this and told that it encompasses all of humanity.
Richard Skinner, the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, said he could not rule out the possibility that U.S. officials sent Arar to Syria to be tortured, something the administration has denied for more than five years. In his report, he stated officials knew it was "more likely than not'' that Arar would be tortured if he was returned to his birthplace rather than Canada, his country of residence.
